Abstract

BACKGROUND & AIMS:
Recent research has suggested that dietary fructose intake may increase serum uric acid (UA) concentrations. Both UA concentration and fructose consumption maybe also increase in NAFLD. It is not known whether dietary fructose consumption and UA concentration are independently associated with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Our aim was to investigate the factors associated with NASH in children and adolescents with proven NAFLD, and to test whether UA concentrations and fructose consumption are independently associated with NASH.

Serum visfatin level as a noninvasive marker for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in children and adolescents with obesity: relation to transient elastography with controlled attenuation parameter.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:
Obesity is associated with an increased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Visfatin is an adipokine produced by visceral fat tissue and liver cells. Transient elastography with controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) noninvasively assesses liver fibrosis and steatosis.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

Paediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is highly prevalent among children with obesity. The primary objective of this study was determining whether obesity severity is associated with NAFLD severity. By using paediatric classifications for severe obesity, clinicians may be able to better risk stratify patients, which in turn would guide more effective management and treatment.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:
Shear-wave elastography (SWE) is a novel non-invasive method that involves application of local mechanical compression on soft tissue using focused ultrasonography and acquiring strain images that show tissue response. In this study, our goal was to assess the performance of SWE in the staging of liver fibrosis in children with chronic liver disease.

Stratification by Non-invasive Biomarkers of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Children

Yiyoung Kwon 1, Eun Sil Kim 1, Yon Ho Choe 1, Mi Jin Kim 1

Abstract
Background: The spectrum of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) ranges from isolated hepatic steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis to fibrosis. We aimed to introduce useful biomarkers released during liver inflammation and fibrogenesis that are easy to use in outpatient clinic and adjust to children to evaluate each NAFLD stage without biopsy.

Background:

Noninvasive hepatic fibrosis scores that predict the presence of advanced fibrosis have been developed and validated in adult patients with NAFLD. There is an urgent need to test and develop similar scores in children with NAFLD. The aim of our study was to assess the utility of commonly used adult fibrosis scores in pediatric NAFLD and to develop a pediatric specific fibrosis score that can predict advanced fibrosis.
